AKELEY, Minn. (KFGO) – One man is in jail and another is in the hospital after a shooting in Hubbard County.
Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes says a man called the Sheriff’s Office just after 12:15 Friday morning saying he’d been assaulted.
The caller, 26-year-old Jonothan Smith, said 25-year-old Ryder Schlagel assaulted him. Smith told dispatch that he then shot Schlagel in the leg.
Officers from multiple departments went to Smith’s home in rural Akeley, and found Schlagel with severe bleeding from a gunshot wound. Schagel was flown to Sanford in Fargo.
Investigators learned Smith and Schlagel had sent threatening text messages to each other starting Thursday Evening.
The argument culminated with Schlagel and another person going to Smith’s home and pounding on his door. Smith opened the door and the men fought. Smith was carrying a 9mm pistol in his waistband, and shot Schlagel.
Smith was arrested for 2nd Degree assault. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.
