GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO) – A Grand Forks man is facing a number of felonies after police say he led officers on a chase through Grand Forks Saturday night.
Officers tried to pull Shawn Schweigert, 32, over after noticing his car had two different license plates. Schweigert sped off even though the patrol vehicle’s lights and siren were activated.
Schweigert made his way to S. Washington Street where he continued speeding and drove on the berm to avoid traffic.
Police say Schweigert tried driving back onto the street, but hit a crossing post which disabled his car. Schweigert ran, but officers tackled him and were eventually able to detain him.
Court records show that a search of Schweigert’s car uncovered suspected methamphetamine, a used needle, a scale, and narcan.
Schweigert is charged with felony reckless endangerment, fleeing, preventing arrest, and drug offenses. He’s also charged with misdemeanor DUI, refusal to halt, unlawful use of license plates, and duty upon striking property.
Schweigert, who has three other open cases in Grand Forks County involving drugs and fleeing, is in the Grand Forks County jail.
