FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — There is a growing frustration among some city leaders about the inability to crack down on nuisance vehicles and their drivers.
They say the city continues to be limited by current state laws.
The goal now is to work with state lawmakers to make changes including increased fines for racing and exhibition driving and increased fines for repeat offenders.
Another proposal is to allow cities to double fines for a large amount of moving and equipment violations, but any action wouldn’t come for months since the legislature doesn’t meet again until January.
“I’m looking for teeth. We’re getting calls on a daily basis of speeding cars. I’m getting recordings of cars speeding. They’re audio recording them and sending them to me saying ‘this is unacceptable, I can’t live here like this’,” said Fargo City Commissioner John Strand.
Fargo Police Chief Dave Zibolski said, “There’s just a number of statutory limitations that don’t allow us the flexibility to do what we would like to do.”
Chief Zibolski would also like to see a law change in regards to fleeing from officers by holding the owner of the vehicle liable.
