ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Public safety officials are urging people in Minnesota to use caution when lighting off fireworks.
State Fire Marshal Dan Krier (CRY’-ur) says it’s important to keep water nearby.
“You know having a garden rose reeled up at your house if it’s 50 feet away, it’s going to take you time to go to your house, grab the hose reel, turn the spigot on,”Krier says. “You want to have to there so you can extinguish the fire, you can extinguish the firework.”
Krier says grass and debris can still burn despite all the recent rainfall. Fires sparked by fireworks have caused $11 million in damage over the last five years.
Krier says there is a lot of danger with bottle rockets and fire crackers and there’s a reason they’re illegal in Minnesota. Twenty-two people were treated for fireworks-related injuries in the state last year.
