CRANE LAKE, MINN. – Investigators in northern Minnesota said a man died in a drowning near Voyageurs National Park on Sunday.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the 50-year-old man from Embarrass was participating in a recovery operation for sunken machinery on Crane Lake, just outside the Voyageurs National Park boundaries.
Investigators said the man failed to resurface after a lengthy period underwater. Rescuers later pulled the man’s body from the lake and brought him to shore, where he was pronounced dead. According to the sheriff’s office, the victim was a trained SCUBA diver but was not officially affiliated with any recovery or transport company.
The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death. The victim’s name has not been released.
