Minnesota Vikings and Fargo Park District launching High School Girls Flag Football Program (Fargo Park District)
MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO-Learfield) – The Minnesota Vikings are expanding the state’s high school girls flag football league to 104 schools this year, including a new league in the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area. This more than doubles the league’s reach in just its second year.
Youth and High School Football Manager Emily Weinberg explains that the teams play five-on-five instead of the national seven-on-seven standard for accessibility reasons.
“We have a four-week consecutive season starting on Sunday, April 26th. And the purpose of playing on Sundays is again, that accessibility. We want to make sure that girls who are playing other sports are also able to play girls’ flag,” Weinberg said.
Weinberg says the high school league began in 2024 with four teams, then saw an explosion of interest in 2025, upping the number to 51.
Weinberg says about 55% of girls playing were not previously involved in another sport.
“We hear from a lot of people, like, ‘Oh, I played football in the backyard with my brothers and my dad and my uncle. But now I actually can play it as a true sport, as the way that I want to.’”
She says the accessibility of Sunday games and a short season opens the door for girls.
The first program of its kind in North Dakota is open to girls in grades 9–12 from Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead and surrounding communities.
