Fargo City Commissioner Michelle Turnberg
FARGO (KFGO) – City Commissioner Michelle Turnberg has announced that she’s a candidate for Fargo mayor.
She made the announcement in a social media post shortly before the filing deadline Monday afternoon.
The former TV news anchor, who has also worked in the medical equipment industry, is one of five candidates who hope to replace Mayor Tim Mahoney. He has served the maximum number of terms as a commissioner and as mayor.
Also running for mayor are City Commissioners Dave Piepkorn and Denise Kolpack, State Senator Josh Boschee and Fargo Human Rights Commissioner Sekou Sirleaf. The election is June 9. Turnberg is half way through her first term on the commission. If she was elected mayor, a special election would be required to fill her commission seat.
National Guard member Jake Coulter, who was the first to announce that he was running for mayor, did not submit the required number of signatures prior to the filing deadline and will not appear on the ballot.
Eight candidates have filed for the two open seats on the City Commission. They are Derik Arneson, Scott Brekke, former City Commissioner Tony Gehrig, Nicole Gullickson, Aaron Hill, Anna Johnson, Former Cass County Commissioner Chad Peterson, and Jeremy Schaeffer.
