Weekly CO report
District 1 – Baudette area

CO Tony Hams (Warroad North) spent the week checking area anglers and following up on various complaints. Hams would like to remind anglers to be careful on the ice with accesses deteriorating.
CO Nicholas Prachar (Baudette West) reports continued angling pressure on Lake of the Woods. Time was spent checking angling activity and assisting with a detail in the Twin Cities.
CO Bobby Stringer (Thief River Falls West) reports hazardous ice conditions on the Red River of the North, Upper Red Lake, and Thief River. Stringer wants to emphasize safety as open water, shifting ice, and warm weather could result in catastrophic results. High water resulting from melting ice was noted at several accesses along the Red River. Enforcement actions for the week included angling during a closed season and attempting to violate big-game laws (illegal possession of big game).
CO Sarah Jahn (Thief River Falls East) spent time on investigations from the most recent deer season. The law and ethics portion of a firearms safety class was taught in Warren.

District 2 – Bemidji area

CO Jamus Veit (Bemidji #1) spent some time training at Camp Ripley. Time was also spent checking anglers and monitoring closed forest roads and ATV trails. He wants to remind people that the Wilton ATV trail is closed until May 1.
CO Angie Warren (Mahnomen) monitored ice angling activity and ice conditions. Wildlife management areas and waterfowl production areas were patrolled. Time was spent working ATV and off-road vehicle activity. Warren also worked a detail in the metro area.
CO Jake Swedberg (Detroit Lakes) spent the week checking anglers and assisting with K9 training. Other time was spent answering questions about ATV laws and assisting with a detail in the Twin Cities.
CO Andrew Goodman (Perham) reports poor shore ice, reducing angling activity on many lakes. ATV and fire activity have picked up across the area. Current conditions are very dry. Goodman encourages folks to check local burning restrictions before having any type of fire.
CO Brady Manteufel (Bagley) patrolled public lands, investigated a calf kill, and gave a recruitment talk at Bemidji State University. ATV enforcement was conducted on closed forest roads and trails, along with expired registration and no registration displayed violations being addressed. Please check with the DNR and county sites on ATV trail openings and closures before riding. Discrepancies in off-road vehicle and Class II ATV registrations were also observed. Review your ATV specifications and ensure you have it registered as the correct vehicle classification.
CO Ryan Schaefer (Bemidji #2) spent this past week attending waterfowl enforcement training at Whitewater State Park. Time was also spent checking local anglers and patrolling area ATV trails. Enforcement action was taken for operating a motor vehicle on a snowmobile trail and persons under the age of 18 failing to have a helmet while on an ATV.
CO Bill Landmark (Moorhead) spent the week checking anglers and spring beaver-trapping activity. Warm weather has deteriorated shorelines and nearly ended the ice fishing season. Those anglers finding good access are having good luck for panfish. Calls from the public included reports of incidentally taken muskrats, requests for permits for found deer skulls, and a report of wanton waste/litter of snow geese. Landmark would like to remind everyone that it is a dry spring and to pay attention to conditions and permit requirements prior to burning.

District 3 – Fergus Falls area

CO Tricia Plautz (Henning) reports the deterioration of ice conditions has put a sunset on the ice fishing season in the area. Wildlife management areas were patrolled, and ATV activity was monitored. Spring beaver trappers were active and illegal-burning activity was monitored with high winds over the weekend.
CO Ryan Brown (Elbow Lake) focused his enforcement effort on trapping and fishing activity throughout the week. Miscellaneous wildlife-related complaints were received and fielded, and equipment maintenance was conducted.
CO Shane Osborne (Evansville) checked anglers, ATV riders, and ice conditions. A fish-overlimit complaint was received and investigated. Dead-animal complaints were received.
CO Jake Homan (Alexandria) spent the week patrolling Douglas County for angling and trapping activities. Time was spent following up on ongoing big-game and trapping cases. Homan also assisted on a public safety event in St. Paul.
CO Felicia Znajda (Osakis) patrolled the rise in ATV activity with the recent warmer weather. She continues to investigate big-game violations from the deer season. She assisted other agencies at the Minnesota State Capitol over the weekend.
CO Curtis Jepson (Wheaton) spent time on angling activity. Lake Traverse is almost ice-free and most rivers fully open. Boaters have already started venturing out. Reminder: Boat plugs must be out when traveling on roadways and watercraft registration must be current. He also spent time on a public safety detail at the State Capitol over the weekend.
CO Emily Douvier (Morris) completed a variety of training.
CO Andrew Ladzinski (Glenwood) spent time patrolling for ATV and trapping activity. Many lakes are not accessible anymore due to deteriorating ice conditions along the shorelines. Enforcement action was taken for ATV and off-highway motorcycle violations and for trespassing while crow hunting.
District 4 – Walker area

CO Nick Baum (Park Rapids) patrolled the area for angling and off-road vehicle traffic. Baum reports ice conditions in the area are OK but wants to remind anglers to bring safety equipment with rapidly changing conditions. Paul Bunyan State Forest roads and ATV trails are closed and will be updated on the DNR website when they are open for motor vehicle traffic. Baum took enforcement action for operating a motor vehicle on posted closed forest roads.
CO Landyn Saewert (Wadena) spent the week patrolling area lakes for angling and trapping activities. He took several reports of fires. People are reminded to obtain a permit before burning. Other wildlife-related complaints were handled throughout the week.
CO Patrick McGowan (Cass Lake) patrolled area lakes for angling activity. Very few anglers are still fishing as ice conditions are poor in most areas. McGowan also assisted with a detail in the metro and completed annual training.
CO Jack Lien (Walker) conducted waterfowl training in the southeastern part of the state. The training plays a crucial role for newly hired COs as there are many regulations and laws to learn when it comes to waterfowl hunting. Additionally, Lien assisted with a public safety detail in the metro area over the weekend.
CO Corey Sura (Remer) assisted with training for the division’s most recent hires. It focused on waterfowl identification, laws, and enforcement techniques. Sura also worked a public safety detail at the State Capitol.
CO Levi Brown (Staples) focused on recreational vehicles this week with increased ATV activity. Brown also assisted local first responders on multiple unpermitted fires. Enforcement action was taken for burning violations.
