DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO/KDLM) – West Lake Drive in Detroit Lakes is looking a bit different, as crews remove more than 100 trees ahead of a planned construction project.
The City of Detroit Lakes says the work is necessary to prepare for a major upgrade that will include road and utility improvements, a new bike and walking trail, and enhanced beach and public spaces.

Of the 159 trees in the project area, 104 are scheduled for removal, which is about 65%.
City forestry workers say many of the existing trees are overcrowded and declining in health. About 30% are expected to live three years or less, and 85% have a lifespan of less than ten years.
To replace them, 58 new trees will be planted, including some larger, more mature trees, along with a mix of species designed for long-term health.
The removal must be completed by March 31.
While there will be less shade in the short term, shade sails will be installed in seating areas while the new trees mature.
The city says the wood will be reclaimed by a local organization for use in a future community project.
Several open houses and community input opportunities were made available to the public prior to work starting on the project. You can learn more about the tree removal here.
