BEMIDJI, Minn. (KFGO) – A Bemidji man has been charged in Beltrami County District Court after he admitted to stealing nearly $13,000 from an elderly relative.
Daniel Bliss is charged with two counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult.
The investigation started in July 2025 after the Bemidji Police Department was contacted by an assisted living facility in Bemidji.
Staff at the assisted living facility said a resident in her 90s was approximately $50,000 behind on her bills.
The assisted living facility told police that Bliss was in charge of handling the finances for the woman, who has a number of medical issues, including being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023.
A Bemidji Police detective and Adult Protection Investigator met with Bliss, who admitted to using the woman’s money to buy a generator, pay his credit card bill, buy food at local restaurants and send checks to his ex-wife.
A review of the woman’s bank account shows that Bliss spent $993 on food for himself, $2,407 to pay his utilities, sent $3,928 to his ex-wife and paid $5,567 on his credit card bill.
Court records say the total amount Bliss embezzled from the woman is $12,896.
