North Dakota Highway Patrol assists at scene on US HWY 83 near Wilton, ND.
WILTON, N.D. (KFGO) – U.S. Highway 83 north of Bismarck was closed for about an hour after the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office says a man pulled a gun during a traffic stop.
A Burleigh County deputy conducted a traffic stop around 9:30 a.m. on Friday after observing a possibly impaired driver.
The deputy asked the man to exit the vehicle, which he did without issue.
The deputy says the man immediately showed a handgun and suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Other deputies, the North Dakota Highway Patrol and Wilton Ambulance responded to the scene and the highway was closed.
Life-saving measures were administered and the man was taken to a Bismarck hospital, where his condition is unknown.
Traffic was diverted to ND Highway 36 for about one hour.
