FARGO (KFGO) – Over the past week, the Fargo Police Department says it has investigated multiple incidents involving Verizon-related fraud.
Investigators say scammers are using personal information to open new Verizon accounts or access existing accounts.
Once inside the account they may purchase phones, internet services, modems and other items. In some cases, these items are shipped to the victim’s own address.
In one instance, police say a victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be from Verizon security, stating that fraud had been detected on the account. The caller requested remote access to the victim’s phone to cancel an iPhone purchase and instructed the victim to use return shipping labels emailed to them to send back the package once delivered.
Police say to monitor your accounts regularly for unfamiliar activity, use unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication, and contact Verizon immediately if you notice suspicious activity.
You can report any fraudulent or suspicious activity by calling 911 or the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701-451-7660.
