Kendra Mishel Cain
WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KFGO) – The owner of a spa in western North Dakota has been arrested and charged after investigators say she claimed to be a registered nurse and was performing medical procedures without a license.
On Jan. 22, the Watford City Police Department received information about Kendra Cain, the owner of Royal Med Spa located at 361 Main Street North.
Officers and detectives conducted a multi-day investigation, which determined that Cain had been identifying herself to the public and to patients as a registered nurse.
Investigators confirmed through state and national nursing and medical provider databases that Cain does not hold any nursing or medical licenses.
The investigation revealed that Cain allegedly used a staff member’s medical license to schedule patients, prescribe medications, and perform medical procedures.
Watford City Police officers executed a search warrant at Royal Med Spa on the evening of Jan. 22. During the search, they located a patient treatment area containing a used IV bag, tubing, syringe, needle, bandage, and an open sharps container.
Officers also observed what appeared to be fresh blood on the floor beneath the IV infusion area. Investigators say Cain admitted to officers that she had administered medical treatment to a patient using the items located in the treatment area.
The next day, officers spoke with the patient who received the treatment. The victim, who is a registered nurse at a local medical facility, said she had to coach Cain through the IV administration process.
The victim also told officers the tourniquet used during the IV placement was left on longer than appropriate, causing her hand to turn blue and purple.
The victim says she saw approximately three to four inches of air traveling through the IV tubing into her vein, which she stated could potentially result in an air embolism, a condition that can cause serious injury or death.
Cain was arrested on Sunday, Jan. 25 and taken to the McKenzie County Correctional Facility. She has been charged with the following offenses:
- Unauthorized Use of Personal Identifying Information (Class C Felony)
- Reckless Endangerment (Extreme Indifference) (Class C Felony)
- Deceptive Writings (Class A Misdemeanor)
- Practice as a Nurse Without Proper Certification (Class B Misdemeanor)
The Watford City Police Department is requesting that anyone who experienced medical issues after receiving services at Royal Med Spa contact dispatch at 701-444-2400 (press 4 for dispatch).
