WASHINGTON (KFGO) — A bill signed into law at the White House awards three Congressional Gold Medals to the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.
Minnesota Congressman Pete Stauber was with President Trump for Friday’s signing ceremony.
“I am in awe of these hockey heroes. They changed the game of hockey,” Stauber said. “It was a powerful, dominant performance that this country needed. They beat the powerhouse Soviets.”
Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith co-sponsored the Miracle on Ice Congressional Gold Medal Act.
The medals will go to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota, the USA Olympic Museum in Colorado Springs, and to Lake Placid, New York.
There were 12 Minnesota collegiate players on the team lead by University of Minnesota coach Herb Brooks.
