Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is providing more details about a police pursuit and officer-involved shooting that left a man dead last week Thursday in Clearwater County.
Dennis Hoie of Bagley was shot and killed by deputy Noah Hallman after Hoie fired a flare gun at officers.
It began when a deputy recognized Hoie at a convenience store and knew he had a felony warrant for his arrest. The deputy tried to arrest Hoie, but he resisted and left in his pickup.
Deputies and Bagley Police chased Hoie, who drove through two yards before law enforcement stopped his pickup using a PIT maneuver. The deputies and officer tried to get Hoie to come out of the pickup, but he refused.
The BCA says Hallman broke the glass of the passenger side window as Hoie pulled a flare gun and fired it toward deputies on the driver’s side. Hallman fired his handgun and struck Hoie. Hoie, 75, was given medical aid, but he died at the scene.
Hallman and another deputy each suffered minor injuries. Hallman, who has three years of law enforcement experience, has been placed on critical incident leave. Hallman’s body worn camera was on and recording.
The investigation is ongoing.
