Earlier this month, U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council Manager of Global Strategies and Trade Sadie Marks and USGBC Senior Marketing Specialist Javier Chávez escorted a team of Mexican craft brewers to visit U.S. barley and malt producers in North Dakota and Wisconsin.
“The Council maintains strong relationships with Mexico’s largest craft brewers, supporting programming to differentiate U.S. malt quality and logistics from competing suppliers,” Chávez said.
“The Mexican craft brewery sector has been growing exponentially each year, with early adopters becoming more consolidated and now selling products in supermarkets, a significant achievement that will help the entire industry scale production.”
The group’s first stop was at USGBC member Two Track Malting Company, where participants learned about barley growing, quality and sustainability and how the company oversees every aspect of production for their customers, from planting to delivery.
In Wisconsin, the delegation visited fellow Council member Briess Malthouse, a family-owned business with nearly 150 years of experience in developing specialty malt varieties for its customers.
Afterward, brewers using specialized Briess malt varieties showed attendees the quality and adaptability of U.S. barley and malt.
“New, smaller breweries are carving out niche markets in Mexico, offering products in specialized craft beer bars and even upscale restaurants that want to expose customers to trendy new types and flavors of beer that young consumers are drawn to, and U.S. producers are ready to help supply the materials,” Chávez said.
