HORACE, N.D. (KFGO) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who died of a gunshot wound at an apartment in Horace as 23-year-old Sakeena Khaadi.
Khaadi’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Derrick Lobbo, was arrested but is not yet facing charges directly connected to the shooting. Lobbo is in the Cass County Jail on charges of reckless endangerment, child neglect and two outstanding warrants.
“He’s being held, however we haven’t filed formal charges yet,” explains Cass County State’s Attorney Kim Hegvik. “We expect that formal charges will be filed at some point in time but we want to make sure that we are fully reviewing the entire investigation to make sure that we get it right.”
The shooting took place just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7994 Jacks Way. Sheriff Jesse Jahner says multiple people were in the apartment at the time and Red River Regional Dispatch received four emergency calls about the shooting.

Cass County Sheriff’s Office hosts news conference on Nov. 6 about a shooting in Horace, ND on Nov. 5.
“There was a lot of pieces of information coming in to us and the situation was rapidly evolving,” Jahner said. “We had a number of people who witnessed things, saw different things. So it obviously takes a while to get there and start those life-saving measures. And then once that’s done, make sure we’re continuing to make sure that the scene is safe.”
Investigators say two women performed life-saving measures on Khaadi before first responders arrived. She was found in the hallway of the apartment complex and pronounced dead on scene.
Sheriff Jahner says Lobbo left the apartment and went to the Sanford Horace Clinic asking for help. He was then seen yelling and running down the street back to the apartment complex where he was taken into custody.
Lobbo’s two-year-old child was in the apartment at the time of the shooting and Sheriff Jahner says the child was found near a gun. The toddler has been reunited with Lobbo’s family.
A Cass Clay Alert was issued as the situation was unfolding, though Jahner says some people may not have received it. He reminds community members that they must sign up for alerts on the county website.
Investigators believe the shooting is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The case remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the county coroner, state’s attorneys office and North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call 701-241-5844.
Lobbo is scheduled for a bond hearing on Friday, Nov. 7.
