Groundbreaking of new Regional Law Enforcement Facility and Crime Lab in Mankato
MANKATO, Minn. – Mankato will soon be home to a new regional law enforcement facility and crime lab. Gov. Tim Walz and public safety officials broke ground on the project Monday.
The governor says this will give law enforcement the tools and technology to work more efficiently to solve crimes.
“What this facility will be able to do is to process up to 6,000 cases, up to 12,000 pieces of evidence. It will allow law enforcement to not have to take time away to drive evidence up to the Twin Cities to have that evidence processed so we can get what we need to process crime scenes,” Gov. Walz said.
Drew Evans, Superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, says the entire state will benefit.
“Adding a third BCA laboratory will reduce the caseload for all of our labs, allowing us to process evidence faster and help agencies solve crimes faster,” Evans said.
The new facility will be funded through the bonding bill that passed during the last special session. It will add 50 agents and forensic scientists throughout southern Minnesota. It’s expected to open in March 2027.
