MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO) — A former Minnesota Teacher of the Year who was found guilty of first-degree sexual conduct with a student at a Minneapolis school has been sentenced.
39-year-old Abdul Jameel Wright sentenced just over 14 years in prison. Wright will spend also have 10 years of probation and will have to register as a sex offender. He has been given 38 days of credit for time already spent behind bars.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says prosecutors argued for the longer prison sentence, saying Wright abused his authority as a teacher. Under state guidelines, the charge carries a recommended sentence of 12 years.
Wright was charged last year. He sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl between 2016 and 2017 while teaching English at Harvest Best Academy.
Wright was awarded teacher of the year in 2016.
