GRAFTON, N.D. (KFGO) – A Walsh County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in an incident while attempting to arrest a suspect near Minto on Tuesday.
A deputy was dispatched shortly before 3 p.m.to the area on Highway 81, north of Minto, on a report of a male who was lying down in the middle of traffic and reportedly jumping toward traffic. The male had also been attempting to get into vehicles and was attacking people, according to radio traffic at the time.
The deputy found 39-year-old Andrew Mattson, of St. Thomas, walking in the middle of heavy traffic on the highway. Mattson was ordered to stop several times, but he turned around and aggressively ran towards the deputy. The officer attempted to deploy his taser, which failed, and Mattson attacked him.
Mattson was taken to the ground and, after resisting, was handcuffed and taken to a local hospital for medical clearance. While at the hospital, he spat at a deputy. The deputy’s name is not being released at this time.
Mattson faces the following charges:
Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault, a Class C Felony
Terrorizing, a Class C Felony (two counts)
Reckless Endangerment, a Class C Felony
Assault on a Peace Officer, a Class C Felony
Contact by Bodily Fluids or Excrement, a Class C Felony
Unlawful Entry into Vehicle, a Class C Felony
Preventing Arrest of Discharge of Other Duties, a Class A Misdemeanor
