MINNEAPOLIS – Federal prosecutors have charged 28-year-old Asha Farhan Hassan in a $14 million autism fraud scheme.
Investigators say Hassan submitted fake treatment claims through her company, Smart Therapy, and also took part in the $250 million Feeding Our Future fraud scheme during the pandemic.
The Minnesota Department of Human Services says it began investigating Smart Therapy last year and stopped payments after search warrants were served. Court documents allege Hassan paid kickbacks to families, billed Medicaid for services never provided, and used taxpayer money to buy real estate in Kenya.
The agency says it has since tightened oversight of autism services, including billing limits, staff screening, and will launch a new licensing system in 2026.
