MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead police have released body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting that left two men dead earlier this month.
It happened the night of Aug. 11 after officers were called on a report that two men assaulted a woman in the 2400 block of 3rd Avenue N.
In the videos, officers are seen trying to enter an apartment unit to arrest one of the men. They repeatedly order 42-year-old Nathan Heiberg to open the door. The officers were also concerned about the safety of two young children inside.
The officers tried entering with a key, but when that was unsuccessful, they eventually began breaking the door of the apartment unit down. When they entered the unit, one of the suspects fired on an officer:
After the shot was fired, officers called for help from the Red River Valley SWAT team. About an hour later, there was a flurry of gunfire. It’s unclear from the released video who fired the shots, but officers can later be seen taking the children from the unit and giving aid to one of the men.
Nathan Heiberg and 41-year-old Lucas Heiberg died in the shooting. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
