FARGO (KFGO) – Police Chief Dave Zibolski has confirmed that two deadly shootings in Fargo early Sunday morning are connected.
One took place outside District 64, a bar and nightclub on Broadway shortly after 2 a.m. The second shooting death was at an apartment complex in the 4700 block of 16th Ave. S. That shooting was reported just before 2:30 a.m.
“Our team has identified that these two incidents, the homicide-shooting and the homicide at 16th Avenue, are part of an ongoing feud between two groups of individuals,” Zibolski said at a Monday afternoon news conference. “This appears to be going on for some time, we don’t know the motive behind the feud, but it’s obviously escalated,” he continued.
Zibiolski said the suspect in the downtown shooting is Tyrque Jones, 20, of Fargo. He said officers were close to the bar when a shot was fired in a parking lot. Zibolski said Jones, who remains at large, should be considered armed dangerous and should not be approached. Killed was Azeem Hughes, 19, of Fargo. Two other people, 21 and 23 years of age, were wounded. One of them suffered critical injuries.
“This was a very large scale event, I think for those of you that have been downtown during the bar closing, you know that’s a large crowd in a very short amount of time and if there’s something else in addition like this that is flaming tempers or making it more rockus, it becomes a very dangerous situation for everyone,” said Zibolski.
Most metro police agencies assisted Fargo officers at the downtown shooting scene while West Fargo Police officers handled the separate deadly shooting at Westwood Estates, an apartment complex, which was reported about 30 minutes after the shooting downtown.
Police say they believe another person is responsible for the later shooting, but they have not disclosed his identity. The victim in that shooting has been identified as 20-year-old Elijah Hughes of Fargo.
Captain Bill Ahlfeldt said three guns have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Zibolski became somewhat agitated under questioning by reporters who asked why police did not release more information prior to Monday afternoon. Zibolski and Mayor Tim Mahoney issued statements of reassurance to the community late Sunday afternoon that downtown is safe.
“This is not a TV show, this real life with real people, we have to follow our investigative leads, we have to follow the law, we have to apply for search warrants, we have to do things by the book, which takes significant time,” Zibolski responded.
