FRAZEE, Minn. (KVRR) — The officers involved in the shooting of a chase suspect last week at the Frazee Rest Area have been identified by Minnesota BCA.
The Bureau says Becker County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Luke Sweere and Detroit Lakes Police officer Philip Vaughn both fired their weapons at 36-year-old Todd Burris of Bemidji. Sweere has 26 years of law enforcement experience and Vaughn has 16. Both officers are on leave during the investigation.
On July 9, a woman claims Burris assaulted her, took her gun, and slashed her tires before fleeing rural Detroit Lakes. Burris was stopped in Detroit Lakes but then fled, beginning a pursuit which ended at the rest area.
The BCA says Burris pointed a gun at Lt. Sweere before an exchange of gunfire.
Burris was hit in both legs and officers gave him aid until he was taken to a hospital in Fargo. When he is released, he will go to the Otter Tail County Jail to face charges.
BCA agents are reviewing body camera footage.
