
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – It has been a busy season for emergency managers and storm chasers so far in Minnesota.
The State Climatology Office says the preliminary tornado count through the end of June was 48. That surpassed the average number of tornadoes in Minnesota for a whole season. Typically, Minnesota has an average of 46 tornadoes per year.
Statistically, June is the highest month for tornadoes with an average of 14. July is second with an average of 12.
Minnesota’s worst year for tornadoes between 1950 and 2020 was 2010 when the state recorded 113. There were 71 tornadoes in June of 2010. The state had 48 tornadoes on June 17, 2010.
Minnesota’s tornado season stretches from May through September, but there have been tornadoes as early as March.
