BISMARCK (KFGO) – The North Dakota Secretary of State says District 25 in southeastern North Dakota cannot replace former Rep. Cindy Schreiber-Beck. Earlier today, District 25 republicans said Terry Goerger would be appointed as Schreiber-Beck’s replacement. She died last month.
Secretary of State Michael Howe says that appointment is invalid, as District 25 did not formally organize. His office received a letter from Ann B. Smith, requesting Goerger’s appointment, but Howe says Smith is not the chairperson of District 25. Only recognized district chairpersons can request appointments from the Secretary of State’s office.
The NDGOP says District 25 is not organized under party guidelines, and no chairperson exists. The NDGOP says it will assist in organizing the district, and will cover the organizational meeting costs.
