FARGO, N.D. (KFGO/KVRR) — In light of the attacks on Minnesota legislators that left two people dead and two severely injured, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the public can take steps to make sure law enforcement is who they say they are.
The sheriff’s office sent out an email to its deputies, telling them to make sure they are carrying credentials at all times.
People who don’t believe a deputy is legitimate can call Red River Regional Dispatch Center for verification. When getting pulled over, Sheriff Jesse Jahner says all vehicles have license plates that either say ‘POLICE’ or “Sheriff.”
Jahner says the fact that the alleged Minnesota shooter impersonated a police officer makes all their jobs less safe.
“We want our community to trust us. We want our children that need help to trust us and be able to approach us. And so when people do these types of things, it causes distrust and it can make our jobs harder and sometimes unsafe for everyone involved. The citizen and then our law enforcement officers,” Jahner said.
Jahner’s email ends saying these types of events can erode public’s trust in law enforcement, and that his deputies must make sure they assist in regaining that trust.
