EAGAN, Minn. – The slaying of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and shooting of Senator John Hoffman have Minnesota in the national spotlight for the wrong reason.
Carleton College political analyst Steven Schier says the state has had turbulent times since the early years of statehood.
“There was the Depression of the 1930s and a lot of labor strikes then, the big demonstrations in the 1960s and early 70s, but Minnesota has never had an assassination like this in its state history. This is remarkable,” Schier says.
Schier says it has not been a good five years for Minnesota going back to the police killing of George Floyd and riots in Minneapolis.
