FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (KFGO KBRF) – Otter Tail County deputies say a New York Mills man charged with the death of his passenger in a rollover admitted to drinking and purposefully driving recklessly.
Izak Schermerhorn, 18, was arrested late Tuesday night for the death of 18-year-old Blake Unger of New York Mills.
Deputies were called to a report of a rollover near Wadena. They met with emergency responders, who said that an individual, later identified as Unger, was pinned under the pickup and was already dead. Unger had recently graduated from New York Mills High School.
Court documents say Schermerhorn told investigators that for the past year, he had abstained from alcohol, but decided to celebrate after graduating. Schermerhorn was arrested and taken to the Otter Tail County Detention Facility in Fergus Falls.
Schermerhorn has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide, driving in a negligent manner, driving under the influence and driving negligently while under the influence.
He was released from jail after posting $1,000 bail.
