ST. PAUL, Minn. – A bill approved by the Minnesota House Ways and Means Committee would provide extended benefits to the laid off mine workers on the Iron Range.
600 miners were temporarily laid off in March in Hibbing and Virginia.
“I just want to highlight the fact that I think all of us in this room want to make sure our workers are taken care of when something like a mine unexpectedly shuts down,” Rep. Cheryl Youakim of Hopkins said.
Under the bill, the miners would receive an additional 26 weeks of unemployment benefits that would carry until June 2026. The bill is headed to the House floor for consideration.
