
WATFORD CITY, N.D. (KFGO) โ The McKenzie County Sheriffโs Office is releasing more information about an officer-involved shooting at a home south of Watford City.
The Sheriffโs Office says deputies responded to a domestic disturbance involving a gun and encountered a man and woman on the front lawn. The man walked toward the deputies and told them he had a gun.
The deputies told him to get back, but he refused to comply. One of the deputies shot the man with a taser. The man continued toward the deputy and they both eventually fell to the ground. The man said he had a gun several times.
The man was able to get back up and continued toward deputies until one fired their gun at him.
The man, identified as 65-year-old Walter Fitzwater, was taken to the hospital in Watford City where he died. The name of the deputy has not been released.
The deputy who shot Fitzwater is on paid administrative leave and the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
