FARGO (KFGO) – Fargo’s quarter-cent sales tax increase for police and fire department funding goes into effect Tuesday.
The measure was brought forward by Firefighters Local 642 and passed overwhelmingly in the November general election. Revenue from the tax will help fund the police and fire departments for the next 20 years.
The union says the money could be used to build a fire station, law enforcement training center, equipment or recruiting.
The increase puts the general sales tax for purchases in Fargo at 7.75% with 5% going to the state, 2.25% to the city, and a half-cent to the county.
