MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO/WCCO) โ An 18-year old man will spend 15-years in prison for his role in the Minneapolis mass shooting at the backyard music venue called Nudieland.
Dominic Burris pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree unpremeditated murder and first-degree assault with great bodily harm in the August 2023 incident. The actual sentence is for 23 years but the Hennepin County judge is giving Burris 355 days for time served, and the last third under supervised release.
Another 18-year old charged in the case took a plea deal and is serving time in a juvenile correctional facility.
August Golden, 35, was killed in the shooting and six others were injured.
โDominic Burris caused immeasurable harm that night and for that he is being held accountable in a manner that is necessary to protect public safety,โ said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty. โMy thoughts today are with Augustโs family and loved ones as well as all the others who were injured and traumatized that day.โ
Burris, who is from Hinckley, Minnesota, pleaded guilty in January to one count each of second-degree unpremeditated murder and first-degree assault with great bodily harm, according to court records.
โWhile today is the end of our prosecution in these cases, it simply marks a new chapter in what will be a lifetime of missed memories and pain for those who were directly impacted by this mass shooting,โ Moriarty added.
The shooting unfolded in the backyard of a home on the 2200 block of 16th Avenue as a local band was finishing a concert with around 30 to 50 people in attendance.
Witnesses told investigators that Burris and Cyrell Boyd were not part of the crowd filled with people in the LGBTQ+ community and allies. At one point, investigators say Boyd and Burris made derogatory comments about the sexual orientations of the people at the concert before several gunshots were fired.
