National Farmers Union and Coldiretti issued a joint declaration and letter to U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and the European Union.
โFarmers on both sides of the Atlantic are feeling the stress and uncertainty from the threat of tariffs,โ said NFU President Rob Larew. โTrade tensions will raise costs, disrupt supply chains and restrict markets causing farmers, consumers and businesses alike to suffer.โ
โWe urge our leaders to begin negotiations as soon as possible to prevent further economic hardships on American and European farmers and communities. Farmers across the globe depend on a strong transatlantic partnership between the United States and the European Union,โ added President Larew.โ
โThe trade war puts agricultural producers at risk and must be stopped before it causes further damage,โ Coldiretti President Ettore Prandini emphasized. โWe share with our American colleagues the same concerns about the negative effects of this escalation and the need to restore a constructive relationship between the European Union and the United States.โ
Presidents Larew and Prandini sent a joint letter calling for โdiplomatic efforts that prioritize fairness, stability and sustainable trade policiesโ to President Trump and President von der Leyen earlier today.
Presidents Larew and Prandini also sent a signed joint declaration in which NFU and Coldiretti state that U.S. and Italian farmersโ work is โvital for national economies, global food security and environmental stewardship.โ
Coldiretti is the leading organization representing agricultural entrepreneurs in Italy and Europe. NFU is the second largest general farm organization in the U.S., representing family farmers and ranchers across the country.
