The red-hot East Grand Forks Green Wave won a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over St. Cloud Cathedral capturing the program’s third Minnesota State Class A Boys Hockey Championship Saturday afternoon at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
After a scoreless first period the Green Wave’s Cooper Hills scored the first goal of the game six minutes into the second stanza.
Bo Schmidt tied it up for St. Cloud Cathedral in the third period with only 47 seconds left in regulation on a power play goal and it would take overtime to decide who would win the title.
Jace Van Eps was able to get a goal past the Crudader’s goalie, Keaton LeGrande with an assist from Jace Panzer to secure the victory for East Grand Forks. It was the first championship for the Green Wave since they went back to back in 2014 and 2015.
