BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – A woman is dead and a police officer is out of the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Bismarck.
Bismarck Police say around noon today, officers were called to the parking lot of a homeless shelter for a woman in an SUV who appeared intoxicated. One officer approached the vehicle, and another spoke to witnesses.
Body-cam footage shows 53-year-old Melanie Udell started to drive off, and was ordered to stop. Police say the woman swerved to hit the officer, but missed. She swerved at officers again, and hit one, causing him to be thrown over a snowbank. Both officers fired at the woman.
Both the officer and Udell were taken to a hospital. Udell was pronounced dead. The officer was able to walk out of the hospital a short time later.
Both officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. The North Dakota BCI is investigating.
