BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) – Work has resumed at the legislature in Bismarck after crossover week when bills move from one body to the other.
Lawmakers are considering a resolution to add an article regarding a minimum wage to the state’s constitution.
The state currently follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The resolution would add a minimum wage to the state’s constitution and raise it by $2.00 to $9.25 per hour.
There would also be an annual cost of living assessment done.
The resolution states that the minimum wage cannot be lowered by the annual cost of living assessment.
Rep. LaurieBeth Hager (D-Fargo), says, “The number that runs true is that 11% of our state runs in poverty. I hope you all look at the compass report and look at what your district is, what percentage of your people are living in poverty, because they’re here.”
If passed, the resolution would be put to voters to decide in the 2026 election.
