ST. PAUL, Minn. – Making Minnesota schools safer is the idea behind the Shield Act.
The bill sponsored by Representative Elliott Engen would provide funding for schools to set up security plans using technology like bullet-proof windows and doors, lockdown systems, and direct communication with law enforcement.
“What we want to do is give them the tools and resources they need to be safe if the worst case scenario did occur. And with nine critical incidents on average in each school district across the state, this is an issue that’s glaring,” Engen said.
Engen wants the grants to be available to all school districts in Minnesota.
The bill now heads to the House Public Safety, Finance and Policy committee.
