BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) โ The Secretary of Stateโs Office has approved a petition for a measure that would change North Dakotaโs vehicle window tinting law.
Under current law, windshield tint must allow at least 70% of light through, driverโs and passenger front window tint must allow at least 50% of light through, and windows behind the driver can be any darkness if the vehicle has side mirrors.
Petitioners want to change that to allow for any color or darkness of tint on any of the vehicleโs windows. Secretary of State Michael Howe says petitioners have one year to gather 15,582 signatures.
If enough signatures are collected, before Feb. 9, 2026, the measure would go on the 2026 primary election ballot. If enough are collected after Feb. 9, but before midnight on Feb. 24, 2026, the measure would go on the 2026 general election ballot.
