ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – A bill introduced in the Minnesota Senate could make Bob Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country,” and Prince’s “Purple Rain” official state songs.
“Purple Rain” is the honored track from Prince’s 1984 soundtrack for the film of the same name. It was also the last song Prince played in concert before his 2016 death.
Dylan’s second album, in 1963, featured the well-known song featuring the Duluth-born folk singer singing of a lost love. He later recorded it as a duet with Johnny Cash to open his album “Nashville Skyline.” The song was also featured in a trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” the 2024 Oscar-nominated Dylan biopic.
Democratic State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead is one of five senators who authored the bill and is the lead on the bill.
Kupec says one of his constituents who lives in the Detroit Lakes area, a big Dylan fan, recommended the idea for the official state song.
After the bill’s introduction, it was referred to the State and Local Government Committee.
