The European Union wants to block imports of particular foodstuffs made to different standards to protect its farmers, which is similar to President Trump’s reciprocal trade policy.
The Financial Times says the EU Commission will look into the possibility of greater import limits, which is a move that would raise tensions between the trading partners. Early reports say the targets could include U.S. soybeans, which are grown using pesticides that EU farmers are not allowed to use.
The EU’s Health Commissioner says that leaders have “very clear signals from the parliament, very clear signals from member states, and our farmers, which says whatever is banned in the EU, it should stay that way, even if it’s an imported product.”
These latest moves could bring pushback from Donald Trump, who repeatedly has accused the EU of treating the U.S. farmer unfairly, and he shrugged at the EU’s pushback.
