FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – The cost of materials used for constructing the massive FM Area Flood Diversion will not be affected by tariffs set to go into effect next month by the Trump administration.
Beginning March 12, President Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum. Trump says the tariffs are designed to strengthen domestic manufacturing.
FM Area Diversion Executive Director Jason Benson says the roughly $3 billion price tag won’t be impacted by tariffs because the steel was manufactured domestically and the cost of the materials are already included in contracts.
Benson says inflation could still affect the cost of some smaller contracts, but the increases would not be due to tariffs.
The Diversion is expected to be completed and operational by the spring of 2027. The project includes a 30-mile diversion channel, earthen embankment and other flood protection measures.
