ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) โ The Minnesota GOP announced recall petitions against every House DFL member on Tuesday. The recall petitions come as a weeks-long boycott continues at the state capitol and what is supposed to be the start of the legislative session.
Republican Party Chair Alex Plechash says Democrats are ignoring a number of issues like a looming budget deficit, and the recently announced decline in reading and math scores.
โI remember a time when Minnesota was held up as being one of the very best states in our educational system,โ Plechash said. โWe have a governor that calls himself the teacherโs governor, and yet weโre failing our students. Well, again, thatโs not going to get solved. The people are in their districts just doing photo ops. We need these people to come back to work and solve some of these issues.โ
Republicans hold a 67-66 advantage in the House but no quorum is present as ruled last month by the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Minnesota GOP executive director Jennifer DeJournett says 33 recall petitions are already out in the field and the rest will go out later Tuesday.
โThe threshold for filing with the Secretary of State is 25 signatures, and I will tell you some of our districts are looking forward to far exceeding that goal,โ DeJournett explains. โThey have prepared for weeks to be able to immediately start to collect those signatures and plan to go to collect them starting yesterday at 5:00.โ
A special election to decide the balance of power has yet to be set but is likely happening in March. Thereโs a high likelihood that seat will remain in DFL hands and would result in a 67-66 tie in the House.
