VICTORIA, Minn. (KFGO) – A girls high school hockey coach is in critical condition after hitting his head on the ice during practice.
Jason Jensen, 44, was running practice in Victoria Friday night when a player accidentally ran into him, knocking him to the ice. Jensen was not wearing a helmet.
A GoFundMe page set up for Jensen’s wife and two young children says, “The impact fractured his skull and created bleeding in his brain. He is currently in the ICU at HCMC and is being carefully monitored as doctors wait to see whether the swelling will go down or if surgical intervention is necessary.”
High school hockey coaches are not required to wear helmets during practice, though the Minnesota State High School League “highly recommends” it.
A spokesman with the high school league says he also expects the league to have discussions about it again as a result of Jensen’s accident.
The GoFundMe has raised over $84,000 so far.
