Grand Forks Police Chief Jason Freedman is sworn in Friday.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO-KVRR) – Grand Forks officially has a new police chief. Chief Jason Freedman was sworn in Friday. He comes to Grand Forks from Madison, Wisconsin.
Freedman brings his 28-years of law enforcement experience to Grand Forks.
“To be a police chief and to take on that responsibility of protecting and serving a whole organization while being our sort of seat at the table with the city and our liaison with the community it just felt like the right step for me,” Freeman said Friday.
In Madison, Freedman served as a police captain, SWAT commander, narcotics task force member, and a peer support commander.
“One of my critical jobs as chief of police, whether it’s with my own team or the rest of the community, is to listen. And so that’s what I want people to feel comfortable coming to me and telling me what I think I need to hear and then we’ll figure out what if anything what we could do with it and how we can successfully address it,” Freedman said.
In his new role, he will be faced with concerns of drug use, property crime, and gangs. Freedman knows he has work cut out for him and hopes the community will be able to share their concerns.
“It’s important to me that we’re fair and impartial enforcers of the law. And you know as it’s not our job to make the laws, but it is our job to enforce them. And while we do it to make sure we’re being transparent and make sure we’re listening to concerns that are raised,” said Freedman.
Freedman is the 24th Grand Forks Police Chief and he says this will be his last stop in law enforcement.
