Cody Steinbach (Otter Tail County Jail)
NEW YORK MILLS, Minn. (KFGO) – A New York Mills man has been charged with 2nd Degree Assault with a Dangerous Weapon after allegedly putting a gun against his ex-girlfriend’s head.
According to court documents, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a disturbance involving a firearm on Monday morning, January 27th.
Officers located the victim, who said the suspect, 32-year-old Cody Steinbach, was still in the house. Steinbach eventually left the house and was detained by law enforcement.
The victim told officers that she had left Steinbach the evening before following an argument. Earlier that morning, she contacted Steinbach to retrieve her belongings from his home. When she arrived, she claimed he fired a gun before pointing the gun at her chest and against her forehead.
Steinbach told officers he fired a round because the victim did not believe the gun was real at first. He claims at one point, the victim approached him with a gardening tool and he inadvertently pointed the gun at her, against her forehead. Steinbach said he did not know why he didn’t call officers if she refused to leave.
Steinbach made his first court appearance on Wednesday, January 29th.
