NEW HOPE, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – Five people are under arrest after an assault at a north metro high school basketball game Tuesday night.
It happened on the sideline in the gymnasium at Cooper High School. The team was playing Fridley when a group approached a 17-year old and began beating him.
A New Hope Police Officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle and after a short pursuit, all five inside, three adults and two juveniles, were taken into custody along with some evidence that may include weapons.
Police Captain Scott Slawson says the five suspects took off in a car following the assault.
“A short pursuit ensued, the suspect vehicle ended up leaving the roadway within a short distance,” says Slawson. “Five people were arrested in the vehicle, three adult males and two juvenile males.”
Slawson says the suspects left the vehicle blocking the roadway.
“There’s more investigation to be done, more evidence to be collected. It’s possible more arrests will be made,” he says adding the attack was not random.
The school affiliations of those involved have not been released as the investigation continues.
