FARGO (KVRR-KFGO) — Fargo’s Solid Waste Service is sharing its progress in reclaiming the city’s East Landfill.
The 160 acres lie on the east side of 45th Street North and the north side of Seventh Avenue North.
The project started in 2016 and entails digging out the original landfill and bringing it up to current environmental standards.
This includes adding a plastic liner and drainage system to keep water mixed with trash from contaminating the soil.
The landfill will be divided into cells at a cost of around 6 million dollars each.
The city says that’s much cheaper than finding and building a new landfill.
“We’ve constructed three, we’re now constructing our fourth cell. There’s a total of eight cells that are going to be done over the next 10 to 15 years. And that’ll give us enough space to operate at that landfill site for another 17 to 20 years,” said Scott Olson, Fargo Solid Waste Director.
The East Landfill was originally in operation between 1950 and 1980.
