MOORHEAD (KFGO) – The Cass County Jail has been dealing with inmate overcrowding for about three years. The jail in Fargo is getting a 192-bed addition, but it won’t be complete until sometime this May or June.
Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner recently asked the Clay County Commission to temporarily board some of the inmates in their jail in Moorhead. Jahner says it’s a struggle every day for law enforcement in Fargo. He calls the problem “a morale killer” as officers make arrests and sometimes have to release those taken into custody because there is no room for them.
Clay County commissioners approved the request during the Tuesday board meeting.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says their county jail will take in 10 prisoners with the possibility of more later.
The Cass County Jail currently has a capacity of 348.
