FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Fire damaged a home in Fergus Falls Thursday. Firefighters responded to the 1200 block of Mitchell Place shortly before 2 p.m. on a report of a fire in the basement of the home. The resident had attempted to put out the fire, but smoke and fire forced him to flee and call 911.
First responders were able to see light smoke through an open garage door and moderate smoke coming from the basement. Firefighters arrived and found fire along the main structural support beam, directly above the fireplace. They took down the ceiling and wall material to get at the fire and knock the blaze down.
Fire Chief Ryan Muchow says damage is estimated at around $10,000. The cause is considered unintentional, caused by heat from a metal fireplace chimney that ignited wood framing.
